Today, I’d like to talk about the overseas market of Japanese AV.As I said in a previous article, there are many fans of Japanese AV abroad. Especially, China, Taiwan, Korea, and Thailand ―Asian countries― are famous for the number of AV fans. So, it is no wonder that AV companies started advancing into the overseas market. The market size of AV in Japan continues to become smaller, and it makes companies international.

Porno is illegal?
But, there is one problem. That is the fact that AV is not always legal. For example, there are many AV fans in Korea, but actually, making and selling AV is illegal in the country. In China, as you may know, the government compulsorily regulates a lot of things, and AV is no exception. So, why and how Japanese AV has become popular in Asia?
The biggest reason is that Asian men want to watch AV by any means. In this Internet age, it is extremely easy for them to know they can enjoy watching sex of a lot of beautiful ladies with Japanese AV. Of course, they can’t buy it in their countries, most of them just google it and watch it on the Internet. Accordingly, they watch Japanese AV illegally, but AV companies start to keep their eyes on Asia, thinking its benefit will outweigh loss by illegal upload.
Promoting AV Actress
Because of regulation, AV companies can’t publicly sell AV. This means they have to figure out a new way of promoting AV actresses. The most common way is advertising actresses as “idol” or “talent”. They will never be introduced as “AV actress”, but fans of them know that they actually are actresses. At an event or such, they wear swimsuits and never be naked, and they don’t sell their videos.
Some companies take other measures. They sell their actresses to movie and music companies! This case is limited to top actresses in Japan, but some of them succeeded to make their debut as screen actresses in Taiwan or pop stars in Korea. Several months ago, three Japanese AV actresses formed the K-pop group “Honey Popcorn”. It was a popular topic in Japan, for Yua Mikami, one of the top actresses in Japan, is a leading member of the group.
This is why and how Japanese AV companies advanced into the overseas market in Asia. I think this trend is really interesting, in that the companies don’t (can’t) take advantage of a job title “AV actress” and the companies target people who illegally watch their AV. They didn’t reject their enemies. Not only that, they brought their enemies over to their side.
